ACC 14 calls for Stengthened Relationship with Society

At its recent board meeting, the International Board of the Compass Rose Society asked President Philip Poole to travel to Jamaica to represent the Society at the fourteenth meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council.

Bishop Poole addressed the plenary session of the Council, asking members to consider ways in which the Society might be more closely linked to the Council.  He also stressed that the support provided to the Anglican Communion by the Society goes far beyond finances.

When asked to expand on the nature of that support, Bishop Poole explained, "The Compass Rose Society has managed to bring together Anglicans from a wide variety of cultural and theological perspectives to make common cause of the mission of the church and to enter into deep relationships in many parts of the Communion".  Bishop Poole presented examples of that mission, including a medical clinic in Kaduna, Nigeria and HIV/AIDS ministry in the Diocese of the Highveld.

Poole stressed that the foundation of the Society's work is in establishing relationships.  "We in the Compass Rose Society are committed to focusing on relationships with our fellow Anglicans throughout the Communion. We seek to bring people together, to build bridges of understanding and a commitment to listen and to listen hard to one another.  Without relationships, the support we provide - be it financial or pastoral - simply would not be possible."

The Anglican Consultative Council responded formally to Bishop Poole's presentation with a resolution that reads as follows:

The Anglican Consultative Council:

(a) thanks Bishop Philip Poole, President of the Compass Rose Society, for his presentation on behalf of the Society;

(b) thanks the Society for its generous financial support for the work of this Council and for mission in the Anglican Communion;

(c) asks the Provinces to consider how they might support the work of the Compass Rose Society, including recruiting new members

(d) asks the Standing Committee to consider and implement steps to strengthen the relationship between the Compass Rose Society and the Anglican Consultative Council, including:

i. identifying areas of Anglican Consultative Council work that may be supported by CRS;
ii. appointing a liaison person from Anglican Consultative Council to the Board of CRS
iii. working with the Secretary General to plan strategic visits to further mission in the Anglican Communion and the mission of the CRS,
and
iv. inviting regular reports from the CRS to the Standing Committee.

The Society is deeply grateful to the Anglican Consultative Council for its resolution of support.  We look forward to taking steps that will allow future generations to continue supporting the Anglican Communion through the Compass Rose Society.
